do doctors have empathy re:time?

I think if my math is correct, that you can only take 6 different meds in a year that take 8 weeks to get a full effect. as i have tryed more than four SSRI's and had no effect (so far) how long do the docs expect me to wait. 8 weeks Is a hell of a long time when your depressed- even the next few hours seem like hell waiting to happen. has anyone got mad/set the doctor a timescale to work around/ told the doctor what you want to do next? what were the results? and was it with the NHS?

Unfortunately there isn't a quick fix! Are you being treated by a GP maybe ask for a referral? Whoever is treating you, maybe get a second opinion, since it doesn't seem like you're getting productive feedback?

Good Luck

James here....

It's not the doc's that mandate the 8 weeeks, it is the properties of the meds themselves, they just take this long to work.

Yeah, I just feel like I am pushing my doc to act. like after trying effexor(75 mg)for 4 weeks with no big side effects-I wanted to up the dose to 150 mg/day and in the end I won. but the drugs take effect faster on a higher dose (at least I read that about venlafaxine). And personaly I dont think SSRI's will cut it- been there done that. So I guess the nightmare situation is to keep trying meds for the next few months to no effect. I am dreading my 22nd bithday in september, if I am still depressed it will seem awful. another year of my 'youth' lost to this. makes me madddddddddddddd grrrrrrr!hehehe

I've been on effexor now for eight months, had to slowly increase because of side-effects, past four months at 150mg. And I would have to say that I'm still improving. I also have been seeing a psychologist for the past three years. This combination is working for me finally, but if you look at the time frame it's not a quick fix.

As you get better and older, it'll just be a bleep on your timeline. So easy to say in hindsight! : )

Best Wishes

This is the wonderful wonderful world of the nhs for you... ignore me cos I'm feeling very very angry and let down by them at the moment... last year i tried 9 different aanti depressents (mainly ssri's, one try cyclic..) due to the wonderful care of my psychiatrist...

Can't give you an answer other than the NHS are so so short staffed that they have no time to give you any more.
