does anyone know how court TV shows are set up? are they real cases? how are people persuaded to let their trials be filmed? are participants coached to act dramatic? do producers know about all the information ahead of time and coach the participants to withhold information until partway through the case?

Well on Judge Judy there's a disclaimer that says people have agreed to give up their actual court case and abide by the TV "trial" decision. So I guess it was real case to start with.

My half-sister was on Judge Judy

She had a small claim case and then went on there. I guess they still hold to that "judgement" so she got her money and all. Haven't seen the tape yet though!

Based upon my miniscule knowledge....

Tabitha has it right. All cases are actual, and no acting or coaching is involved. The only prior work done by the producers is in selecting cases which can be solved in about 10-15 minutes, so they are all cut-and-dry, simple, to the point.

All parties agree to dismiss their actual cases and are contractually obliged to abide by the ruling given on TV. That is part of the reason all of the "judges" are real, authentic judges: so their rulings will be legally binding.

Anything you would like to share with us?

Yeah, well, it's better than soap operas and mindless game shows.
