question about heavy marijuana use

Posted by Lungfluid on December 15, 2003, at 11:21:08

Hello, i've been using marijuana pretty heavily for the last year or so. And just recently i've been having really bad stomach problems. For instance over the past month every monday morning i'd wake up 2 hours before i had to and started to vomit/diareaha. I went to see my doctor cuz i thought maybe it was anexity and he gave me effexor. i took effexor for two days and i got really bad side effects. Pressue behind my eyes, drowsy, bad gas pains and nauesa. I aslo have an Upper GI scheduled for friday. Anyway, my question is could this be cuased by pot? or soemthing else?? Im not even sure if this is the right place to ask. Thanks.

Having formerly been a pot smoker for several years, it sounds to me that, if pot has anything to do with it, it's a result of withdrawl rather than usage. Have you cut back at all recently? Have you lost your appetite? If so, try to taper yourself down.
If this isn't the case, I can't say that the pot isn't causing it, but I'd be inclined to look elsewhere for problems.

That's very similar to how I used to feel. About 15-60 minutes after getting up, my stomach would just be a gnawing hole of pain. I also would sometimes get intense pain an hour or two after eating. I had ~$25K worth of tests done with no findings. It kind of waxed and waned in intensity for years, and I lost a lot of weight. Recently, I was prescribed Remeron, and lo and behold, the problems rapidly went away. I don't know if it was due to some direct effect on my digestive tract, or secondary to alleviating anxiety, but it worked incredibly well, where countless other drugs (Effexor, Celexa, Serzone, Prevacid, Axid) failed.

yes i would definitely go through with the upper GI, as well as a complete work up (blood, urine, etc.) to eliminate any physical cause. i haven't really seen pot cause stomach problems (usually quite the opposite), but it can mask problems. that's why it's best to get the physical stuff out of the way, before you look for other reasons..

hi. up untill about 6 months ago i smoked 1-2 ounces a week, and a year ago, for about 5-6 years i was the largest marijuana dealer in the area (btw, to all LEO's im no longer a dealer so =P ). ive never experienced these problems and know of hundreds of other heavy users that have not had any problems like this. sounds like its something else.

good luck

i personally enjoy at times, but have many friends who are regular heavy smokers, ridiculous amounts of pot. none of them had physical problems as you speak of. i would go to gen pract. and see whats going on.
good luck

Hi Eddie...is Remeron that prescription pill that I keep seeing on TV for IBS with constipation? You know, the one where they show all these women lifting their shirts to show their bloated bellies? It sounds familiar, but I could be wrong.

I had the same effect from pot. Smoking heavily for a while. Then one night I rolled up a joint and smoked it. My stomack felt so sick that I had to lye on the couch for 3 or so hours, just holding my stomack, . I swore off pot for quite some time after that. I won't even go near it anymore. 2 years now.

I got a simalar effect from heavy drinking (without pot), so I quit that, won't drink more than a few; 1 a week for a year imediatly after.

Seems that all drugs can do this.

Still I smoke ciggarettes. Though even those make me a little sick sometimes. Almost like the pot used to.

I am a habitual user, some years ago I began to have a similar problem. When I smoke I immediately need to go to the bathroom, its like a spastic colon or something. Now, if I even am getting ready to smoke it can happen. As for nausea, sometimes when I have smoked too much or it just doesn't agree with me. But this is not the same as waking up with the problem when you haven't touched it. I once saw something about spastic colon and brain chemistry. I don't remember exactly but what I took away was that I was getting a different effect from weed than most which is true. I tend to get more social, more energy, NO HUNGER, and feel generally more in touch with the world. I don't eat until a couple hours after but before that food is repulsive. It is like an upper for me. However, I do think that it affects my brain chemistry negatively and causes depression and a lack of motivation. I think I use it to avoid these things but they just exacerbate it. I am back to the community to find a solution to get me back. Any thoughts? And I hope that helps LungFluid. (nice name by the way, I am sure our lungs are not well to say the least.)

No, that's Zelnorm ( http://www.zelnorm.com )
Remeron is indeed a useful drug for IBS, though. It's the only one I've obtained any benefit from.
