If you're jumpy and anxious you might find that an over the counter antihistamine (the old fashioned kind that makes you sleepy) might help. Here in america a brand name is Benadryl.

Make sure you get enough sleep. Take care of yourself nutritionally. I found that I had an insatiable craving for sweets when I detoxed.

And remember that we are here for you. Treat yourself as if you are getting over a 'flu.

When does the cravings for sweets STOP? I'm on day 4 and I can't get past a bakery without stuffing my face with some sickening concoction. Plus, I've been very tired (the bingeing on crap is certainly not helping my energy, I know) and have not been up to the normal amount of excercise I normally do. Yikes. I really don't want to go to AA AND OA!

It took me a good 4 weeks before the sweets cravings subsided (this after 20 years of a daily booze habit). I guess it depends on our individual physiologies. This is why you see so many people at AA meetings standing outside having a smoke! I tried to satisfy the sugar cravings with adding fruit to my diet. I sure ate a lot of watermelon... but it does get better. Hang in there!

pc is much healthier than I am.

I used chocolate. very, very dark chocolate (less sugar, less calories, all the endorphins.) My personal favorite is lindt 85% cocoa bars.

I'd get the 99% ones, but they are near impossible to get in the US.

pc and AM,

Thanks for the tips. I'm going to get the dark choc, at least the darkest I can find in my neck of the woods here in the USA. I hope it'll help because my cravings tend to go towards cookies, muffins, cakes, etc.

I keep telling myself that Priority #1 is no drinking, which I have done now for 9 days. I'm trying not to beat myself up too much for the weight gain (pants, once loose, REAL tight today) esp. during this adjustment period.

Still haven't been to AA yet. I think I should probably go to a beginners meeting, right? In my area, there a lot of AA meetings but only a couple that specify that they are for beginners. I did talk to my therapist about it yesterday and it was hard to actually say this stuff out loud, but I think it was helpful.

A beginner's meeting would be a good introduction, but I'd say that any old meeting will do, just to get yourself into one and see what it's like. For me, the important thing has been to get to a meeting when I needed one, not necessarily to wait for the meeting I wanted (otherwise I'm not getting into a meeting when I really need to). The sense of community and sharing is the same whether a group is discussing a chapter from the Big Book, or conducting a meeting with a speaker from another area. It's ALL good.

Congratulations on 9 days! That is fantastic.

PC is right - 9 days is amazing.

Dark chocolate - 70% (I do like lindt best myself) is pretty easy to get - my grocery store has them.

85% is tougher. Irony of ironies - the only place I can find them is a liquor store. For the first 6 months or so I always got someone to go shopping with me, but I can handle it now.

And there's always online ordering.

Beginner meetings are usually about working the steps. Valuable information, but in my opinion other meetings are better for support.

If you find an open meeting you can take a friend. I've taken my hubby to a couple.
