First of all, I don't care what anyone says...some people (like me) can get high from tramadol. That is what I have been doing ever since I ran out of vicodin, which I started abusing in January because I was depressed and the drug made me feel quite a bit better, and nobody was the wiser for my having taken it, save a few "I'm so tired" moments.
I've pretty much given up on ADs for various reasons, but the opiod feeling has been a great AD. The problem, of course, is that the more you take, the more you need to take.
I also feel so depressed the day following using tramadol, that I say to mysel " well, you can always start tryign to detox for a few weeks tomorrow". (I had intended to go 4 weeks on, 2 weeks off for the rest of my life, if necessary).
I hadn't always felt this way:I initially thought it would just make me less of a pill while on vacation (no pun intended). Now I am not sure that "better than 'happy'" will ever beat just plain "happy. God, the more I think of it, the more I think I am in real trouble...I just don't want to quit yet - which must make this a pointless posting...
Maybe if I found out that taking these drugs was making my depression worse in the long run I could chew on that...I don't know.
Big sigh......
Diane

Hi Diane
Apart from addiction etc, and with a few exceptions like methadone, I think opiates are among the most benign drugs you can take. (But I don't really know much about Tramadol) And if you do want to give it up you will be able to taper off it, I imagine. I've never taken much of it, but it would be like stopping codeine, dihudrocodeine or dextropoxyphene I imagine. Some people here have been saying that because Tramadol inhibits some seratonin receptor(?) it has some AD action. Do you take heaps of it?

Hi Declan,
Thanks for your post. At this point I don't take heaps of it, but if I don't get away from it soon - at least for a little while- I probably will be....
I remember learing about some serotonin action from tramadol. Odd....the only thing it seems to do nothing for is pain. ha ha!

I feel your pain, and your love of pain free time. It seems that if you take them on and off you are thinking that you till be fine. The problem is that dealing with life without the high sucks. Not only does it suck but schlepping yourself along sober takes so much out of you. The mood variances from the withdrawl symptoms is certainly worse then almost anything. I have been clean for almost forty two hours. I pray to God that when I go to work no one offers me anything, even more so I pray harder that I have the strength to say no thanks. Oh man, another day, another dollar....hopefully just not another high.

I wish I could give you some fabulous 12 step advice or something.
I decided to come clean with my doc and husband. I guess I have been off the stuff for 3 weeks now. I started celexa (worthless, as they all are).
I keep thinking that my body is probably clean and that i could just start the whole thing again...
One thing that has been helpful to abuse instead (ha ha ) has been neurontin. Probably won't do a thing for your pain, but it could take the edge off of temptation.
Take care,
Diane

I guess my post has a sarcastic tone....I mean here that I wish I could say that there was something I could say to make it better...

> Neurontin is a med I used for anxiety and bipolar disorder. If I take it in large doses, I feel a sense euphoria. It might help take the edge off the withdrawl for you....I don't know...It might do nothing. It is an anticonvulsant.I really wish you the best, and I hope I have been more clear this time. Congratulations on what you have achieved so far, What is your plan for pain management now?
Diane
ps: the mood variances are definitely better without that "oh, I have drugs in my body" or "sh**t, I am jonesing". It just gets to a point where there gains cease to outweigh the losses.
One more thing, since we are being frank here....what industry are you in where co-workers offer you vicodin?

Tramadol is the worst. It really bothers me that people are using it as an AD. As an AD is not supposed to make you feel worse when you are not taking it. I have been taking tramadol for four months and I have become severely depressed. Of course when I take tramadol I feel fine. But when not on tramadol I feel horrible. I am trying to quit but it's been difficult, very difficult. Do NOT start taking this drug, it's too easy to get and makes you feel too good and no one is warned about how it can be addictive, only that it is "not addicting."
This is the end of the thread.
