i take wellbutrin and klonopin right now for major depression and panic disorder- they might be adding a low dosage of a mood stabilizer (trileptal or lamictal) as well. im relatively stable at the moment, thankfully, especially compared to the complete wreck i was a few weeks ago.
i just wanted to ask if i were to smoke weed, would there be a bad reaction with any of my drugs? im not saying i want to turn into a stoner or anything, just one of my friends who smokes say it helps with his depression. i've smoked before but never gotten high. i don't want to do anything that would hurt me or mess up my meds but this is kind of an awkward question to ask my doctor ... so please respond. thanks!

Not literally. The way drugs add together is totally individual. Your friend with the positive experience provides evidence that it can work that way. There is a new drug just entering the realm of clinical trials that directly targets the cannabinoid system in our brains. (It's really ironic how these brain functions get named. It's not like Mother Nature put those receptors there for when we discovered cannabis.....but I digress.) And that new drug has antidepressant and pain control properties, in animal studies.
If you're sensible about how much, where, when and with whom (it's still not legal, eh?), and you honestly assess the effect, it's a reasonable option, in my opinion.
I personally never had serious mood problems, until I stopped using it. Is there a connection? <shrug>

I've never had a problem with smoking pot and my meds. I did it for years. It may even help, if you haven't smoked in a while. I recently went back to smoking pot and felt great. I've stoped again.

Wellbutrin for panic disorder, that's an interesting choice. I took that with klonopin and remeron and started to have some manic behavior, which also got my PDoc talking about adding a low dose of some "mood stabilizer" I just quit taking the wellbutrin and remeron and the mania is gone, and I'm not going to get into the mood stabilizer department if I can help it.
As far as the pot goes, why add in the big X factor if you are on the brink of getting into mood stabilizers. Pot makes me paranioid...If I were you I'd leave it alone, or quit taking your psyche meds and just try pot for depression. It does work for some....

If you're not currently smoking pot, I don't recommend ever getting into. Its not the earnie and birt drug that its made out to be. It can make music and movies etc. better (in a way), but I don't see it doing much as far as sorting your brain out. Its more of a kids drug. Reports of feeling paranoid are more common among adults. I don't know if there's just more stuff in your head when you're older and you don't exactly need the kind of introspection that pot brings, or if it has something to do with adult brain chemistry. Then again, tons of people smoke pot and tell you that they're fine (but are they???).
