I posted a detailed post on the PsychoBabble main board.
My son (22)is hospitalized half a country away from me.
Drug-induced voices;paranoia big-time; suicidal, although that's receding;did I mention paranoia?
He's been on risperdone topped up with loxipine (sp? for both) for about 10 days. He's panicked that they haven't worked yet.
He has noticed that he hears the voices when stressed, scared, anxious, upset. So he's started to ask for meds when he feels like that instead of after the voices start, as the meds don't seem to get rid of them.
Any input is welcome.
I am beginning to wonder if he'll come out of it.
It's hard for me to be reassuring when he says things like: "Mom, I don't know if I'm gonna make it." etc.
Jeez. Nobody told me that being a Mom might include this!!!!! No fair. I can't do ANYthing to help, I feel. I guess I'm helping by telling him that I love himm & am convinced that he'll be OK & that he has to try to take a deep breath & know that the meds can take time to work.

Also - I've been on the computer for HOUR :-((

yes - as far as I know he is - well certainly all day & evening. He gets something starting with 'C' to help him sleep also.

I think he is on the wrong med or meds. Zyprexa is the best AP for this in my opinion. Risperdal made my symptoms worse. I don't know about the other med, but I think you should try a medium dose of zyprexa, I had relife instantly. Cures all pain mental. Its calming.

Hi S,
I'll mention it when I'm able to talk with his doctor on Monday.
It's a difficult situation, as I'm half a country away AND he's an adult (supposedly) - 22. I'm Mom, calling from halfway across Canada. The doctor is very nice; that's the good thing.
I'll mention that so many people are suggesting zyprexa. According to someone on here, doctors in British Columbia must have special permission to prescribe it. Isn't it really expensive? I suspect that's why.Anyway, I will mention it to the doctor.
Did I tell on here that my genius son was doing well by Tuesday, going out into the hospital (instead of being scared of people hurting him even on the locked ward). Then in the evening, he was on the enclosed roof with his GF & found a roach in his pocket; took a few puffs (!!!!!!!!!!!) and became totally psychotic again.
I spoke with him the next day & he was TOTALLY dillusional, unless he really IS in danger of getting killed & if he doesn't do it himself his family will get 'done in' also! :-(((((It was horrible hearing that & hearing him say, "Mom, I know the weed made me really upset again, but this is REALLLLLLLLLLL. Nobody will even consIder believing me." etc.
So they have added seroquel or something. He sounded very drugged today & says he TIRED - sleeps during the day; can't sleep at night. But he said he thinks the medication is starting to help somewhat & not a mention of plots or killings or anything like that.
I have to try to remain detached & know that I can do nothing anyway. If he was younger I'd probably have more control.
Anyhow, thanks all, for your support & caring & suggestions.

Sorry for your trouble,
There is hope, I went through a similar situation a few years ago, I've recovered. So will your son. Just be there for him, and believe things will be better, these things take time. Opt for spiritual resolutions other than chemical if you can, I've found the latter is very tough to live with. The pharmaceutical drugs (while in some situations very necessary) can prolong the situation unnecessarily. Sometimes all we need is a little love and an understanding of life and the importance of ourselves. If things don't get better over the next year, learn to let go, there's no point in two lives being ruined. He'll find his own way, you done your job. xxx
Buy a copy of 'Awareness' by Anthony De Mello, for your son and yourself, it may be what you're looking for.

Thank you so very much,
I will buy a copy of that book for each of us! When you said about the spirituality I was going to ask you what worked for you as to ways of thinking etc & I'm glad you mentioned something we could read.
And thx for all your comments.
I found out that his GF had been using crystal meth for 2 months & he didn't know 'til he was in the hosp. They're both back in Ontario now; arrived on Monday. She looked so haggard at the airport that I thought she was maybe doing heroin or something.
I've been posting about it all on the Social Board.
Thx for your caring & support. I'm so glad things got better for you!!!!!!
PS - were N.A. or 12 step groups involved in your getting better? Just wondering.
hugs, Kath
