Seeking MD in Houston

Posted by Siobhan on January 17, 2000, at 0:45:38

Hi, everyone! I just discovered this forum and find it extremely helpful and reassuring. Everyone seems so knowledgeable and trying so hard. I wish you all the very best.

I'm posting because I desparately need a recommendation for a psychiatrist in the Houston, Texas, region specializing in psychopharmacology.

I recently relocated here and have not yet developed any network to turn to for suggestions. After twenty years battling my depression and anxiety and finally achieving some stability on Paxil at 20 mg per day, with Xanax PRN, I discontinued my medications about four months ago with hopes of getting pregnant. But the depression has returned in full force and each day it worsens. I'm so tired of soldiering on and just want some help. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I forget if Baylor University is in Houston or not, but I was treated briefly by a Dr. Garb, who specializes in PTSD. It would be worth contacting Dr. Kaughman and Dr. Garb, even if only to get referrals from them.

Yes Baylor University is in Houston. However the other recommendation, Dr. Daniel Kaufman, I highly recommend. When I lived in Houston I saw him, and I have recommended many people to him over the years, all were very pleased. I have even recommended him to people at this site, who have been quite happy with him. He pays very acute attention to your particular responses to medication and has a huge storewell of information both from observations with other clients and being extremely well-read. Though a mainstream psychiatrist he is also very open to alternative approaches and combining things. Everyone who has seen him has been quite satisfied with quality and intelligence and attentiveness of his care. You can easilyfind him in the phone book. Plus he is very well connected with the rest of the medical establishment and can set youup with other physicians as well for other medical needs. Houston is one of the leading medical centers in hte world and you can get access to top flight doctors there
