DiDi - I don't think that Anafranil has all the problems of the SSRIs (like Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, etc.) but after 3 years and again for 9 months, you should be able to tell us. A very small minority taking Anafranil will spontaneously orgasm every time they yawn. The chance of this happening are remote (have heard it is like winning the lottery). One lady in Britain wouldn't let her doc take her off of the stuff. Just a little bit of trivia - Cam W.

Hey, maybe I should try Anafranil (I don't mind yawning!). Just joking...am very happy with Effexor-XR.

Anafranil was good to me Didi

Anafranil woke my body up in ways I had never imagined before!

I got hypomanic on it quickly, which made me even more hypersexual. I also had problems with impulse control on it (OCD, binge eating).

In short, I tried to seduce my boss, my platonic friend and almost any man I met who I liked (which was, in the state I was in, almost all of them!).

Luckily, my psychiatrist (tried to seduce him) and my boyfriend (couldn't keep up) also noticed quite quickly. I started more lithium, stopped the Anafranil (that was a fight)...and then I started Desipramine. Another trycyclic.

And my sex life...IT WAS FANTASTIC AGAIN! and as I was no longer manic, I managed to keep my sexuality to myself and my boyfriend. I could have great sex all afternoon, and I was only taking 50mg. My boyfriend would always tease me and pretend to steal my Desipramine.

go figure!

the funny thing is (maybe pathetic thing is), prior to taking Anafranil, I had only 2 orgasmism in my life. Since stopping the Desipramine, I haven't had another orgasism. I am also a good, hypocritical, non-practising, guilt-ridden Catholic...who refuses to try to please herself. I have had so many problems with my sexuality...as a result of my mental health problems.

I'm getting off topic...and on to another one that only seems to frustrate me.

Of course, I'm planning to go back to the tricyclics when I get my bipolar back in, hopefully, complete control.

what about you? Janice

I've heard of both. It will vary dramatically from one person to the next.

Janice, your experience has certainly revised my opinions about Anafranil (which I've never tried, having read bad press about sexual side effects) and tricyclics (tried imipramine). Still, consider abandoning any guilt about masturbation and trying self-stimulation (practice, by yourself or esp. with a partner, can get things back on the road very quickly, and it doesn't matter who touches what and who, as long as you're having fun!).--Cindy W

hello Cindy W

my experience kind of made me think, 'Hey, maybe there is some justice in the world'. I mean if anyone deserves to have this reaction to these drugs, I do.

I believe not having regular orgasmism was/is probably physiological for me, and it became psychological. the fear and physical discomfort associated with trying (I did try at one point) to achieve orgasmism and not succeeding seems to remain powerful with me--maybe it's not necessarily the Catholic thing.

But Cindy W, if you are looking for an AD, why not try it? It did also increase my hunger appetite also. I'm guessing that if it increases one appetite it will increase the other.

if you do try it, let me know, Janice

Janice, I'll talk to my pdoc about Anafranil. I'm already taking a pretty high dose of Effexor-XR but am not sure it's enough by itself.
