Meds and weight gain

Posted by Joeypanic on January 27, 2002, at 23:08:51

I was wondering what cause weight gain in drugs such as Remeron,Zyprexa,Depakote etc.Is it just because they increase your appetite? I am on remeron and want to lose weight but is it still possible? Do these drugs just stimulate appetite to make you gain weight or can you gain weight even if on a diet?

I have read that they suppress the satiety mechanism so that you eat more without feeling full. Yes, you can lose weight while taking them. Weight loss is caused by fewer calories consumed than expended. That is not to say that they don't make it much more difficult though.

There might be some metabolic changes induced by the meds that make it harder to lose weight, but I don't know if this theory has been supported objectively.

The exact reason why these meds cause weight gain is unclear. One proposed mechanism, at least for Remeron and Zyprexa, is due to their histamine (H1) and serotonin (5HT2C) receptor blocking effects. Blockade of these receptors tend to increase appetite and subsequent weight gain. On the contrary, ziprasidone (Geodon) which is also a 5HT2C receptor blocker causes minimal or no weight gain. Go figure.

It appears that weight gain (and sedation) from Remeron tends to subside as the dose is increased.
