The exact reason why these meds cause weight gain is unclear. One proposed mechanism, at least for Remeron and Zyprexa, is due to their histamine (H1) and serotonin (5HT2C) receptor blocking effects. Blockade of these receptors tend to increase appetite and subsequent weight gain. On the contrary, ziprasidone (Geodon) which is also a 5HT2C receptor blocker causes minimal or no weight gain. Go figure.

It appears that weight gain (and sedation) from Remeron tends to subside as the dose is increased.

> I was wondering what cause weight gain in drugs such as Remeron,Zyprexa,Depakote etc.Is it just because they increase your appetite? I am on remeron and want to lose weight but is it still possible? Do these drugs just stimulate appetite to make you gain weight or can you gain weight even if on a diet?
