ADD meds, Zoloft, wieght issues

Posted by marip on November 18, 2003, at 20:51:55

Ive been on Prozac, Celexa, Wellbutrin, Effexor over the past 2 years for depression and anxiety. Except for the Effexor which I hated, all the others worked well for a while and then peetered out. Now Ive just realized that Ive had ADD since I was a kid also (Im a woman by the way). My MD suggests Zoloft for the Depression/anxiety but will this help the ADD? Have people had improved mood, less anxiety on ADD meds alone? Adderall, Strattera, etc? Or is an SSRI necessary for those symptoms to be better? At this point the anxiety and depression are top priority but if the ADD is under it all...

Also, everyone seems to have weight problems with Zoloft. Is anyone out there who has not? Or who has resolved weight issues with zoloft?
Any feedback or personal experiences welcome!
Thanks all who are out there,
marip

Hey!
I have ADHD, GAD, and Bipolar, but have been in your position: diagnosed with depression, ADD, and GAD. For that, I tried on all the ADD meds (except Straterra) and Zoloft. To answer your questions as best I can, in a different way than you asked.

I never noticed Zoloft helping the ADD, but I did notice an effect on my depression when I took Dexedrine/Adderall with Zoloft. My mood definitely improved, probably for the reason that I was getting more things accomplished and I was able to stay more organized (and therefore I couldn't beat up on myself for not doing those things). However, I've noticed that I'm more anxious and fearful when I do take ADD drugs (esp. Dex and Adderall). The Zoloft helped alleviate that somewhat.

I hope that makes sense. About weight, I was on Dexedrine, then Adderall, when I took Zoloft. I gained no weight at all, actually lost a bit!

Hope this helps. I think treating all of your symptoms will help you feel your best. There is some research that all of these things are inter-related in the brain... but I can't explain anything to ya about that! ;)

Thanks memma, that is helpful. I guess I need to talk to my docter further about maybe taking a few of these meds at once. Thanks for sharing!
be well,
