Herballife--any experiences? Please write!

Posted by Notalis on December 11, 2003, at 6:52:23

I just received the box of Herbalife weightloss plan I ordered off the net.
I need to lose about 15 pounds.
Anyone have anything they can tell me about it?
My doc says I shouldn't do the program but he didn't really say why.
I've looked for any literature about herbalife and depression.
I've just spent a whole lot of money (unfortunately BEFORE my doc said no) so, PLEASE write me so I know if I should chuck it out.

I think the most important ingredients would be:
alfalfa leaf,
celery seed powder,
parsley herb,
astragalus root?,
marshmallow root!,
fennel seed,
golden rod,
liquorice root
then there's another pill with:
cacao fruit,
yerba mate,
bladderwrack?,
meadowsweet,
and green tea extract.
There's a drink powder with added caffeine.
I don't see any guarana (natural ephedrine) listed anywhere.
So, whaddaya think?

I took Herbalife for about a year a few years back. You'll lose the weight while taking the product, but as soon as you stop, it'll come right back. You'd have to make the commitment to spend hundreds of dollars to maintain your weight, all the while taking tons of pills ("diet supplements") and drinking shakes and teas to "boost your metabolism". I eventually became stressed out and cranky, due to the "speeding" of the green and beige energy pills. I had too many sleepless nights due to the racing heart from the ephedra. Once off the Herbalife, it all went back to normal (well, as normal as I could be), but the weight comes back, too. Truly, the only way to take the weight off and keep it off is the old standard (unfortunately)... portion control and exercise. Good luck to you... don't waste your money!

From MLM Watch http://www.mlmwatch.org/04C/Herbalife/herbalife00.html

MLM Watch is part of the Anti-Quackery Ring, an alliance of sites concerned with health-related frauds, myths, fads, and fallacies.

My personal experience with every single person I've known to use this product (over the past several years) is that they've spent their money and not one achieved the results they were expecting. Basically a good concept that costs too much and lacks scientific studies showing its efficacy.

YMMV

Well, that sux, cause I spent the money!
I've always been a sensible person--in fact, I'm always an advocate of proper eating and exercise for weight loss, when it comes to other people!
I just gained after I quit smoking and saw this stuff on ebay in one of my shopping manias, and, well, the rest is history (and sitting on my kitchen counter!)
Heck, maybe I'll have a herbalife shake with my cheeseburger! LOL

Looks like the ingredients are not dangerous - except that the caffeine and other stuff might make you feel hyper. But from the responses, it doesn't sound too promising in the long run.

Bill,
Yeah, I'm pretty bummed (and now more broke)
But, on the 19th my doc wants to try changing me from prozac to something better for cyclothymia, so maybe I'll see my energy level go up that way and I can get back to a healthier way of life...

Notalis,

Instead of being bummed why not try being proud of yourself for wanting to get meds working better and for striving for a healthier way of life?

By posting here you are already reaching out and showing that you're taking the first steps. IOW you're walking the walk. I'm proud of you for that.

Please keep the board updated, if you are so inclined, after your pdoc appt. I truly hope you continue to work towards something that makes you feel 'happy' or 'right' or whatever the absence of cyclothymia would be like in your life.
