Prozac to Nardil 14 days Wait?

Posted by Flipsactown on March 28, 2004, at 22:49:01

I am on my 9th day of not having had any AD's including Prozac and I am having a very tough time dealing with, not only my unipolar depression, but to go another 5 days before I can even take my first Nardil. Then I will have to wait some more for Nardil to get fully in my system. Anybody know how long it will usually take for Nardil to kick in? Depression sucks! Thanks for listening.

Hi,

I can really sympathize with what you're going through. Stopped Lexapro about a week ago so I can try Parnate (similar to Nardil). Went off the Lexapro too fast and I am now going through withdrawal-like symptoms. Changing medication is not fun!

I would go very cautiously/low/slow. In one of the sections of Dr.Bob's website it says the washout period is 5 weeks! I have heard of people having Serotonin syndrome from MAOI after 30 days of being off Prozac. It all depends on your liver.

Two things to remember: The antidote for a hypertensive crisis is primarily nifedipine. The antidote for serotonin syndrome is chlorpromazine(Thorazine/Larcgactil) which can also lower your BP.

Cheers,
Panda.

If it were me, I would probably wait even longer, this because of Prozac's unusually long half life. Serotonin syndrome has occurred in a number of cases in situations like this involving Prozac and an MAOI, and I believe I would wait 30 days if it were me. To me, the 14 days is based off of the majority of antidepressant half lives, which generally are less than 48 hours (it takes five half lives for a drug to completely clear your system).

From Prozac to an MAOI, definitely no less than FIVE WEEKS!
