Anyone taking Risperdal?

Posted by tampagirl on March 11, 2005, at 14:46:42

My psychiatrist just added 2mg risperdal to my celexa and I've read about some of the side effects. Anyone here taking it and if so, what side effects have you had? Has it helped you? Thanks.

hey! One of my friends just stopped taking risperdal, and I took it briefly. Based on my experience and what I've read in clinical studies, it seems that risperdal is one of the harsher "atypical" anti-psychotics; its more likely to cause things like akathisia, tremor, anxiety, hormonal weirdness, and such than most of the other atypical anti-psychotics (clozapine is harsher than risperdal--relatively high risk of seizures, weight gain, drooling, etc., but low EPS profile). The best comparison I found was in a study where the authors concluded risperdal's side-effects were kind of like lower-end doses of haldol (haloperidol), whereas other drugs such as zyprexa and abilify tended to have fewer side-effects traditionally associated with antipsychotics, though they had their own problems (inducing mania, etc.). Risperdal has also been the cause of at least one successful malpractice suit (the patient won) against a shrink because of severe tardive dyskinesia resulting from use of the drug.

Hi, I took Risperdal. It was a nightmare for me. Sore muscles, tremour, BIG TIME akathisia. I couldn't handle another day like it so I stuck it for about a week then just quit.

But everyone reacts differently, so don't worry. You might not experience this. xxx

Oh dear, I feel so bad because no one is posting anything positive about the med. But I do know that it has helped a lot of people. I was given Risperdal to boost my AD and because I was having some psychotic moments (some auditory hallucinations).

I had very bad edema and I started to lactate on it (note: I later found out that I have naturally high prolactin levels so I can't really take any anti-psychotic ... none that are available in Canada like Ablify.

Despite what anyone posts here I think you should try it and see how YOUR body responds to it.

Good luck with the trial and let us know the outcome. Who knows, this could be the med for you!

Have you ever tried Seroquel?

Hi Maxime!

In trials, Seroquel sometimes elevated prolactin temporarily but it didn't usually persist. I wonder whether your prolactin would have dropped back down after a while.

Hum, I don't know. When you are female it's not something you want to wait around and find out because your breasts hurt so much!

Seroquel made me too tired anyway. I am telling you, Thorazine is the only AP that has ever made me feel better. None of the other ones made want to pursue dealing with the lactation etc.

I am really puffy now after taking 12.5 mg of Thorazine nightly for over a week and my breast are starting to engorge. It's so sad.

I took .25 risperdal for I think 4 days to help me sleep. It didn't make me sleepy though, it was more like a mild warm pleasant buzz.

Yes me. I'm taking 0.5 mg of Risperdal as needed for bipolar II disorder. No side effects. Great med. If you only need a **small** dose of AP, then Risperdal is the best.

No, I can imagine!

Will you try 6.25mg?

Hi Ed,
No I don't think I will. Well maybe I should. I don't know. I wonder if I will benefit from such a small amount. I guess there is only one way to to find out.

Hi Maxime!

Do you think that you're benefitting from 12.5mg? If you are, you're already benefitting from a very small amount! Why not try an even smaller dose?

>I guess there is only one way to to find out.

That's the spirit :-) I'm not saying it'll work, I'm just saying it's worth a try.
