Seroquel seems 2 good 2 be true

Posted by DoYouKnowHim? on June 6, 2005, at 20:38:32

In the eight years I have been battling anxiety, I finally found a med today that nailed it. Yes, I know that every medicine affects everyone differently. Yes, I know this is one day. But it is one more level day that I have had in the last eight years so cheers to that.

I started on Lamictal on Friday and told my pdoc today I couldn't calm down. I got 25 mg of Seroquel TODAY. Yes, it knocked me out for about an hour. Yes, it made me feel a little out of it. But more importantly, it addressed the anxiety that has been ravashing me for the last eight years (I'm 34).

I know it is a med for bi-polar. My grandmother was bi-polar, the manic type. I didn't have the same symptoms, but perhaps some of the same genes. I have racing thoughts, obsess on worry, and feel an andrenaline rush on my mind all the time.

I think I have tried every med in the book over the last eight years, and nothing hit it like this. This gives me hope. I'm on the right road, thank God. Again, I don't know if it will work tomorrow, but it did today and I am thankful for that.

I appreciate everyone's input on this board. It is so informative and supportive. Michael

I just got the same script and I have got my fingers crossed. I'm happy for you, and hopeful for me.

If you could, and you want to, let me know how it keeps going for you. I'm sooooooo hoping I can get some relief. I've got a couple of bipolars in my family tree, although I want some help with depression and anxiety. I start taking it tomorrow. Are you taking it at night?

Sleepy:

Let's stay in touch. I took it in the middle of the day and am checking with my pdoc today about what time would be best to take it. One thing is for sure: The first day you take, no matter the dosage, you will be ... sleepy.

Do you have AIM?

Hi Michael,

Just out of interest, have you tried any other antipsychotics apart from Seroquel?

Ed.

how many times a day do you take seroquel and at what times?
if you take it once-a-day, does it last all day for your anxiety?
thanks!

No, I don't have access to AIM. I'm going to take the first dose tonight. So along with the effexor and klonopin I should be a pretty sleepy girl. Thanks for the response. Hope springs eternal.

Oh man, I guess it was too good to be true. It helped so much the first day. But the second day. It just didn't hold down the anxiety as long. I am thinking about taking about 25mg. What do you think?

Do you think it would hurt me to take a second 25mg today? I cant get in touch with my pdoc.

I don't know, but at least it's the lowest dose that isn't cutting it, maybe a higher dose will work. I guess you should wait for the pdoc.
I just took mine. I am sleeeeeeepppppy, wooooooo

The low doses don't work for me, so you are certainly not alone.

You cannot be hurt by taking 25 mg. At most you will be sleepy! Eventually, probably, you'll find some sweet spot dose that consistently calms you down without making you zonk out. Don't be afraid to find it.

hi PM80
so in your experience the sedation caused by seroquel diminished after a while but the calming and anti-anxiety effect from seroquel remains?
thanks

Yes. But I take 300mg at night, so this dose is more within the typical bipolar range, rather than the typical anxiety range. Initially, I was titrated slowly up to 100mg/day (taken 25mg in morning and then afternoon and 50mg at bedtime), and this definitely was not a high enough dose for me.

I tried to go down to 200mg at night, and repeatedly the next morning/day it was clearly not as effective as the 300mg at treating my hypomania.

Thanks for posting the info chess,
I just started the stuff myself at 25mg at night. I slept quickly and soundly for the first time in well.....a while. I'm glad it works for you. I don't know how much I'll end up taking, for me it's the anxiety that really causes a lot of discomfort.

Thanks for your input. It is valuable. My grandmother was bi-polar and I don't have the same symptons, but obviously some of the same genetics. How long have you been on Seroquel? Has it helped?

I've been on Seroquel for about 7 months. And I've been on Depakote, too, for the last 2-3 months. And yes, absolutely, the seroquel has helped me.

Have used Seroquel for a few months for insomnia. Started at 25-50 mg at night, now at 50-75. Can also take half a pill when needed in the day. I am so sensitive to seroquel that I take it exactly 1 1/2 hours before bedtime and fall asleep instantly. I can't imagine taking over 100 mg in the daytime! This is a great drug and it works for me. I also take lamictal and lexapro.
Hope it works.

I hesitate to get too positive about it, but I think Seroquel is working for me. I can't dare express how great that might be. I don't want to get too excited, but I think I might be feeling a little better. I'd really like to feel less overwhelmed. Fingers crossed.

hi sleepygirl
glad to hear of your progress and positiveness!

some questions for you if you don't mind...

1) how much seroquel are you taking and when do you take it?

2) if you take it once-a-day, does it work for the whole day? or do you have to take it twice-a-day for it to work for the whole day?

3) what is it helping you with? panic? general anxiety? obsessive thinking?

THANKS!!!

Hi chess,
no problem answering questions at all....

1) I just started it one week ago. I only take 25 mgs, once a day, at night. It's wonderful at helping me sleep.

2) Once a day only, I still get anxious, but I'm not terrified so I like that. I just didn't want to be paralyzed by anxiety. I really tried not to go this route (Seroquel), but I was feeling pretty crappy.

3)I am taking it for general anxiety and my psychiatrist says it will help with the depression. I also take .5mg klonopin and 225mg effexorXR. My psychiatrist officially prescribed it for a "disorganized depression".

Thank you for your interest. Have a lovely day.
