A Pdoc that Gets it?

Posted by Phillipa on December 15, 2011, at 9:57:22

Finally a pdoc that has been around since the early meds were out. He's very astute notes are amazing, doesn't forget a thing, and has diagnosed me as ocd but not in need of med changes at all. And one of the questions I asked yesterday was does anxiety have to be associated with depression. He said definitely no that some people have pure anxiety disorders without depression. I've been trying to tell docs this for years. So he's treating me for anxiety only. He's used all the old meds which we discussed as I was curious. He said that the SSRI's were definitely an improvement as no suicides with them like TCA's and other classes of meds. Also that the TCA's caused massive weight gain, dry mouth, constipation. None of which I've experienced on SSRI's. Also he didn't feel the older antipsychics like mellaril were dangerouse he'd used them and never had problems with patients. He felt the newer atypicals caused more weight gain, metabolic syndrome in patients. Also doesn't feel I need theraphy. Some new ideas for sure. He's also not intimidated for lack of a better word for what I do know of meds. I like him. Phillipa

Referral from another pdoc here that my next door neighbor sees. Saw him for a short while and he was much too aggresive for me. Phillipa

Not sure that I agree therapy isnt necessary for an anxiety spectrum disorder thats probably rooted in childhood trauma somewhere.
I had some compulsive behaviors due to my trauma and it took some time to get through that.

I have to ask PJ....

If your new pdoc does not recommend therapy or a change in medication, what benefit do you get from seeing him rather than just getting your meds from a GP?

GP's don't give them out here nor internists which who my primary is they refer you. Since have medicaire can refer myself. He's put my life in perspective and I'm more out and about now. He provides confidence and knowing I'm not nuts is a relief. Ocd folks like and need structure as he said and I knew. Hence docs and Nurses most seem to have some. Mine is not extreme. PJ

That's awesome. I know what you mean, I think, about not intimidated. After you go through the system for awhile and gain your own knowledge, it seems it's harder to find a pdoc or therapist who has that intelligent authority.

Do you mean that you`ve finally got a pdoc that isnt *suspicious* of your knowledge? I`ll bet alot of them expect patiennts to be unknowledgeable about meds, and they dont know what to do with someone who has been around the block a few times... does their own research... etc. I`m so glad you`ve got a pdoc now who`s got a stable ego and doesnt need his patients to be ignorant. I also think alot of them might be on the lookout for `drug-seekers` and probably a primary characteristic of a drug-seeker is a patient with a high level of knowledge about medications.

Excellent that you like him and that he's helping you :)

GPs don't prescribe SSRIs?

Saw him three times now and when he asks if I need a script for a med I say no. Why because I don't need any right now. And I've said "see no reason for a new script since you have no problem with the low doses I'm on". He agrees? Sounds okay? I've decided to cancel last appointment with old pdoc as see no reason for the long ride. For what? If she's not practicing after end of this Month her license will not be good for scripts she writes. She's marrying and moving out of state. Phillipa

Ed well my internist who is my primary doctor refers you to another speciality doc for anything. He has referred me for thyroid to the endo. The internist will not treat it he says. If a psych med find a pdoc. Maybe some do but not mine I guess doesn't want liability? Who knows? Hence refer myself. I ask other docs who they use. Example for a fall hurt foot asked the expensive dentist who takes no insurance you file one own, who a good foot doctor was, he said go to xxxx saw him needed the back doc and he said oh my Brother saw a great neuro spinal doc let me get his name for you as the brother is also a foot doc there. As for dermatologist recommendation from plastic surgeon here. All take medicaire so it's great so far. Six years here so far. PJ

Oh the referral to this pdoc was from one I saw here who no longer takes medicaire he took a week and researched and found two this is the one I chose as same age as me. We share many of the same experiences in life. Phillipa
