Twitching tongue

Posted by Lamdage22 on August 27, 2014, at 11:19:53

My psychiatrist had me stick out my tongue and it twitches when i stick it out. And now that i am aware of it even twitches inside a little.
I take 7.5 Zyprexa and 800 Seroquel.

Im scared i might get a permanent movement disorder. Basically look like an idiot doing funny stuff with my mouth.
Id rather be psychotic!

Is this tardive dyskinesia?

I take Zyprexa only because Stablon (and before that Parnate) made me psychotic. Otherwise i would probably be on 200 of Seroquel like before those experiments!

I am thinking to replace Zyprexa with Clozapine for 3-4 months and then discontinue.

Watcha guys think???

I was on Zyprexa 7.5 mg for many months and did notice the odd twitch but was not sure if it was the med or just me. My cousin in Denmark has been on 20 mg for years and years and has not had any issues. I don't know whether or not you should be worried. If the twitching persists I would definitely ask for an alternative. Keep in mind that clozapine comes with its own set of side effects. Best to discuss all this with your pdoc. Discontinuing an antipsychotic can be tricky. Sorry I can't be of more help.

i'm not trying give a scare but yes that can be happening because seroquel at 800mg with zyprexa will really shut some nuerotransmitters off....and if dopamine is repressed too much that is TD....

one thing i know would help is cogentin because they give that for antipsychotic induced twitching....call your doctor about it

i would try to go fully on sero......or you could take zyprexa at 20mg......

Sounds like very mild TD. If it started shortly after starting zyprexa its likely to be zyprexa and you could stop it. On the other hand at the same time you started taking a very high dose of seroquel. So.. Its likely the seroquel. Maybe reduce the dose. I will say I've taken zyprexa for 16 years and never got even the mildest TD from it. Infact while taking z I've managed to reduce and remove TD from other APs I took. I took a unknown drug in the mental hospital, which I suspect to be haldol. I only took one dose and I had a problem were I could not stop swalowing over and over again till the drug was out of my system. Then the problem in a much more mild fashion persisted for a few years and eventualy went away.

My advice would probably be to reduce the seroquel.?.

But Seroquel is less likely to cause TD than Zyprexa!

What did your psychiatrist say about the fact that your tongue was twitching?

If nothing, or if you said it didn't usually happen and now have noticed it, I would call him and check out this question with him.

Everyone responds different to APs, so it doesn't matter whether anyone else did or didn't have such a reaction at any point. But I would definitely not ignore the symptom, because if it is something, the sooner you catch it, the better.

And how much does it twitch? Even my tongue twitches slightly if I stick it out and I don't take any APs. TD tends to cause fine worm-like movements of the tongue.

could it be low grade EPS, not TD? You're on 2 APs which, if I recall correctly, can sometimes cause more EPS than just 1. But they're both atypicals, so...

...I dunno :-(

PS--How do you handle the sedation w/ zyprexa and Seroquel?

Not so much. But i would say it is a little worm like!

I wouldn't know the difference!

Now that the dose is reduced from 7.5 to 5 its better. I have 6 alarms in the morning, but i do get up.

Thx,
guys

It is worm like!

Im trying to reduce as fast as possible now. I guess thats my best option. Doc doesn't want to prescribe short term Cloazapine. He would for long term but not short term. Go figure!

Stop the zyprexa. See what happens. If it gets worse after stoping z, maybe reduce seroquel.

Sometimes when you reduce the med that's causing EP or TD, the symptoms actually get worse, according to my pdoc, so I wouldn't necessarily assume that it's not zyprexa, if reducing doesn't lessen the symptoms.

I do think still that you should consult a doctor who's knowledgeable about this sort of thing.

I've never had them get worse after discontinuing a med. But they stay the same, atleast for a while, often years. or they decrease a lot and then slowly continue to go away.

I have been on Zyprexa 5mg (before: 7.5mg) for 3 or 4 days and there are no withdrawal symptoms. If by the end of this week, there are still no withdrawal effects, i may go down to 2.5mg.

Man, that sounds really bad. When I take just low doses of atypical APs, my tongue gets this numb feeling. In the old early days of my mental illness, I had no clue whatsoever what that was or even that it was bad at all. Later on, it was explained to me thats a bad side effect.

If it were me, I'd be more concerned about my psychiatrist/patient relationship than the TD. Many psychiatrists will become very defensive and go into this sort of denial phase acting towards you when things like you describe happen.

It does sound like some sort of movement disorder, yeah possibly TD. I dont have TD, but Ive heard once you get it, you are SOL and f*cked. The only "treatment" for TD Ive heard is clozapine and ECT. Ive read ECT can treat TD, especially if its used early on in the TD. I dont know if thats really true and how effective ECT is for TD.

This sort of thing is also why Im real leary about using APs for people who dont have schizophrenia.

good luck

I had a lot of ECT after I got a bad case for TD. It did not go away. I don't know if it lestened it or not.

one time the hospital put me on zyprexa... since my previous dose had been 10mg. they started me on 5 and the next day put me up to 10... i had issues with my tongue, it was a while ago, but i remember having a hard time with articulation, not sure if it was motor or swelling issues. but i told them to take me back down. they did for a couple days before they took me back up... that resolved the issue.

i wish you best of luck.
