I am a pharmacist who will be giving a presentation to a group of doctors (general practitioners) about Effexor on Feb. 16/00 & would like any feedback from patients who have tried Effexor for depression or other conditions. Did it work or not. Anything you would like me to inform the docs about on the use of Effexor. The info will be passed on and will be greatly appreciated.

1. I was asked by the head psychiatrist of our Adult Assessment and Treatment Program at the Alberta Mental Health Board - Edmonton to give a presentation on the clinical use of Effexor (Venlafaxine) to the doctors located in and around the Peace River area in Northern Alberta. Dr.E.Rogan will be presenting the prescribing information and I will be presenting the pharmacological aspects of using Effexor. This will be an informal supper meeting at the local Chinese Restaurant T.J.s. (I have presented to this group on the clinical pharmacology of Zyprexa in the past). My airfare is to be paid by Peace River's Mental Health Services out of their inservice budget. (I will be presenting earlier in the day to families of schizophrenics about the new atypical antipsychotic agents). My hotel room will probably be paid by Wyeth-Ayerst (I hope), but I am getting no other compensation outside of experience with giving this presentation. This is part of my job with the Alberta Mental Health Board so I get paid my regular 8 hours, that would normally be paid if I had stayed in Edmonton.
I give several lectures on the medications used in the practice of psychiatry to many different groups
(eg bipolar, schizophrenia, depression, panic disorder, stigma, and compliance control lectures to clients, families, nurses, therapist, & doctors)2. This presentation is in no way a part of a larger study. Wyeth-Ayerst may be paying for my room (hopefully or I have to) but they have no input into what I talk about. They will not see my presentation beforehand and will not influence my material. They will not be paying for any handouts I may be giving out. I am connected to no research facility.
3. Effexor is available through special authorization when a patient is refractory to at least 2 other antidepressants, to clients of Alberta Family & Social Services and Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped.
4. My credentials are a BSc in Pharmaceutical Sciences (BPharm) and 12 years experience working with clients of Mental Health Services in Edmonton.
I am also an "information junkie" and need to know how and why psych meds work (to the best of our knowledge). I spend at least 2 full days a month in the stacks of the Scott Science Library at the University of Alberta reading and photocopying useful studies for the docs and nurses (and for myself). I like to think I am quite up-to-date on the latest information.
This presentation probably would not be appropriate for non-medical people, but I would be glad to do an on-line presentation if one is requested. I would need time to prepare, to ensure it would be meaningful and scientically accurate.
