In reply to Does Procaine have antidepressant (MAOI) effects?, posted by GANDALF on May 11, 2001, at 10:56:04
> Does anybody have some personal experience of using procaine as an *antidepressant*(vs an anti-aging) medication. Procaine is found in products like Gerovital and Salusa 45 (South African product). It allegedly has MAOI type effects which are mild and reversible (i.e., you don't have to go on an MAOI diet). Any links to *scientific* information would also be appreciated.

Hi.The NIMH (National Institute of Mental Health) has used procaine in the past as a "challenge" to see how people would react to it while their vital signs and brain function were being recorded. They found its psychiatric effects to be highly variable. I know of one person for whom procaine was the only drug to produce a state of relief from his chronic depression. Unfortunately, it lasted for less than an hour. Others reacted to it by becoming very hostile, dysphoric, and even psychotic. I don't know what dosages they used, but I'm pretty sure procaine was administered intravenously
