ADs and brain damage

Posted by Thrud on May 14, 2001, at 5:03:48

Hi everyone.

I guess it's common knowledge that the older antipsychotics cause long term brain damage in dopamine regions of the brain, as shown by tardive dyskenesia (like my mother has). Can we be sure that ADs don't do similar damage to seratonin/NE regions of the brain? As one who has used ADs for over ten years, I'm hoping to find reassurancs that such brain damage does not occur. My fear is that damage may manifest itself more subtely with ADs, such as with long term mood or intellect changes. Has anyone seen any good studies on the subject? I seem to turn up rantings along the lines of, "ADs are evil and will kill you" or "Of course, silly, they are perfectly safe".
Thanks very much.

Thrud
