I did not do an archive, but I found an interesting article about this topic at one of my favorite web sites (sorry Dr. Bob):
What it basically showed in rats is that chronic strss (and therefore stress hormones)seemed to be neurotoxic and cause loss of neurons, and that SSRI's seemed to be protective. Even some cool pictures with staining of the rat brains.
However, I am of the opinion that they are over-prescribed, especially to young children whose brains are still in development, and like any drug the potential risks need to weighed against the potential benefits.
