Mercury amalgam fillings can be a possible culprit in some illness, especially if a person has mercury amalgam fillings and nickle/silver crowns and other mixtures of metal in their mouth. (Batteries are made of dissimilar metals.)
Many of the medical practices that began more than 100 years ago have since been replaced with better or safer procedures. Why the American Dental Association holds on to this antiquated procedure, when we have space-age composites (that even LOOK better) to use instead, I do not know. Perhaps it is because of possible liability issues.
Now that there is an alternative to mercury fillings, no one should subject themselves to the potential toxicity. This was taken from a recent newspaper article:
A Vancouver, British Columbia, apartment complex was evacuated and
condemned in April after a dentist died inhaling toxic vapors while
engaging in his at-home hobby of fooling around with his large

Some people will never have problems with their mercury amalgam fillings. However, other people might consider having them removed and replaced with composite. At the very least, if anyone needs to have a mercury amalgam filling repaired, they should have it replaced with the safer, and more attractive tooth-colored composite.Nine years ago, I had my fillings replaced with composite. I also had my nickle/silver crowns replaced with porcelain/gold. I felt better afterwards.
