There are 3 or 4 new studies regarding its efficacy in the most recent Abstract Book from the 4th Int. Conf. on BD. It's especially effective for bipolar depression (rapid cycling and one study as a primary stabilizer, too), but I'd be *very* cautious on relying on it as your primary mood stabilizer because it can be more like an antidepressant. Other than the risk for mild rashes that are usually transient and very treatable (approx. 10% incidence, and the extremely rare life-threatening rashes; more likely when used in conjuction with other AEDs) it has a very benign side-effect profile.
Your psychiatrist has given you excellent advice regarding elimination of caffeine in bipolar disorder.
