Many people do really well with Effexor. I'll share my experience. Effexor seemed to work for me, but made me sleepy. My pdoc prescribed Ritalin to help me stay awake during the day. The combination seemed to help a lot. I was also on Wellbutrin at that time. For several months I did OK on that combo, but then I started having bouts of uncharacteristic surliness, irritability, and overly-emotional reactions to everything. After several months of that I collapsed into the worst and most unrelenting depression of my life. In retrospect it seems possible that the Effexor put me into "mixed states," something we bipolar types need to watch out for. My question to you: could you be bipolar? The way you describe yourself as "cycling" in and out of anxiety makes me wonder. Bipolar II is often misdiagnosed and, as a result, not treated optimally.
