Please allow me to gently desagree with you in that Ambien is not so much a 'sleep aid' as a 'hypnotic drug' indicated for the treatment of insomnia (sole or with whatever 'psychiatric' component). Also I would love to make it clear that there exist 'benzos' which are hypnotic drugs (e.g. Rohypnol (flunitrazepam) -- and it would be less appropriate to call these 'sleep aids' (though some inserts do just that)...
An uncle of mine (now deceased) used oftentimes what we call here a 'wide-awake' coffee as a 'sleep aid' before bedtime... others prefer benadryl as their 'sleep aid' (as does my brother-in-law who is a physician himself) & others still go to the kitchen eat a banana as a sleep aid in the middle of the night (as I myself)...
Alcohol is the nr. 1 'sleep-aid' in the world & I used whisky with soda mixed with hypnotic drugs (barbiturics included -- please don't do it yourself!) during years (I know I was stupid, perhaps 'criminal' all the time [this was more than 20 years ago] but it kept my dose of hypnotics low and it put me to sleep in less than 2 minutes... also I never had either 'rebound insomnia' or 'anterograde amnesia', nor even any noticeable tolerance to any hypnotic drugs...)I think we all in PB miss your posts.
IagoP.S. Jon, would you please tell us what was your doc's 'hunch' about the 'maximal' dose of Ambien? Just curious... I.
