I was on Remeron for 5 weeks this summer. Started at 30mg, upped to 45mg due to sedation/dizziness/irritablity/edema side effects. Then dropped down to 7.5mg for just sleep. At ALL these dosages I had edema in ankles, knees, and fingers and abdomen bloating. I had continual pain in my ankles and finger joints particularly, as well as stiffness, but my knees were also uncomfortable. (I think most Remeron weight gain that people report is actually due to extreme fluid retention). Whilst adjusting these dosages, I would stop the Remeron for a day and immediately the swelling went away and pain reduced. I've been off Remeron for 3 weeks and have ZERO swelling and joint pain now.
A point of interest though, is that when on the 45mg, I was relatively free of that side effect until about day 6 on that dose, when it came back with a vengeance!!! So some people may be able to experience less edema at that dose level (or higher still). I realized the other day, that I was even having trouble gripping a cup or something with my hands, they just didn't seem to work properly and felt bruised, but now it's all GONE! I attribute those side effects to the Histamine 1 effect and the Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone axis being interfered with, dunno what others here think.
Remeron is a great sleeping pill, dunno how it is as an AD, seemed to do nothing for me, but I had bad experiences with it. I even tried the caffeine thing..no help, nor did drinking gallons of water!
Hope that helps you.
