I once took vicoprofren (vicodin plus ibuprofren) for severe ear and throat pain due to coxsackie virus. My experience was that the pain was only paritally dulled but the medicine made me not care that I was feeling some pain. But it also totally sedated me so that all I could do was sleep, pretty much.
I know that vicoden has a lot of abuse potential, so it is interesting that your pdoc prescribed it.
