Lithium has some really nasty long term effects, although those are mostly in the higher doses.

My mother has serious kidney damage from taking lithium, I'm hoping to get her moved onto Zyprexa. I think it'd make her happier as well.

But the weight gain is horrific for lots of people, so I can see why you'd want to avoid that. My sister says the hunger isn't as bad if you eat lots of lean protein while taking Zyprexa. You crave carbohydrates but protein is what satisfies. Apparently.

Never taken it myself, so I can't comment.
