At least from my experience, desipramine would be more likely to cause urinary retention/hesitation, but I found it to not be intolerable in this regard, and it did get better with time. Desipramine is also more activating and would have more of a tendency to both cause insomnia and increase anxiety. Again, I found both of these effects to diminish with time. I believe it is a better drug for ADD, but nortriptyline may also have some efficacy.Nortriptyline is considered to be moderately sedating and is best taken at bedtime, while I found I could take desipramine at any time of the day and not suffer drowsiness. Desipramine also has the lowest potential for causing weight gain among the tricyclics. Nortriptyline has a bit more of a tendency to do this, but it still falls well short of the really notorious ones such as amitriptyline and doxepin. Both nortriptyline and desipramine can cause dry mouth and constipation, but it is both less common and less severe than any of the other tricyclics.
