stresser:
Well, I'm not a doc but with all your daughter's symptoms, it might be worth a visit to a good (stress: good) endocrinologist.
My psychiatrist referred me to my current endocrinologist, who is considered the best in SF. Previously, my routine blood panels done by my GP showed my TSH ping-ponging all over the place, so he was putting my dose of thyroid replacement hormone up and down and up and down.
Then I went to this endocrinologist, who I call the "mad scientist." He basically said that GPs don't know how to treat hypothyroidism. (Just his opinion!) He runs his own lab because he doesn't trust others. He ran a whole bunch of blood work on me that is outside of the typical thyroid panel. He is known as a maverick and someone who really GETS the interplay between psychiatric drugs and the thyroid replacement drugs.
Currently I'm on a regimen of non-generic Synthroid and Cytomel. I've been hypothyroid since 1990 and I had never even heard of Cytomel (a T3 hormone replacement) before...in any case, this endocrinologist said that once we lock down the medication regime, "You will feel completely different." When I asked if the new thyroid medication will help my metabolism and weight, he said, "Of course it will!" (He's brusque but pretty funny.)
Anyway, this is my experience -- don't know if this was helpful...but I'm really hopeful in seeing this doc so he can collaborate with my pdoc and we can help get my weight under control, and help my BPD.
Let me know if you want more info.!
> I'm interested in the thyriod problems some of you mentioned. My daughter had hers tested in a routine blood workup for accutane, and the doc, said she was fine. Now, with her BED, mood disorder, depression problems I am starting to wonder if her thyroid could be playing into this. Do you think that's possible? She really does hold onto weight like crazy, but then again, her metabolism could be slower. Please give me your thoughts on this one. (She is taking the topamax for the BED) -L
