Here comes a biased opinion---I very much like clomipramine!! It unfortunately pooped out on me, but when it worked it worked well for anxiety and depression. It does have a little weight gain side effect, but I think less so than others...
I say biased opinion because some people do have other bothersome side effects. Especially if you have low blood pressure to begin with, you can easily develop orthostatic hypotension and resultant dizziness when you stand up. Others complain of tiredness.
For me, I only had some weight gain--it seems others can keep it to a minimum with dieting (I had no room to diet--I already eat too little). So for me it was like taking candy. I seem to do very well on TCAs, better than SSRIs. My opinion is that SSRIs are *too* clean--acting only on one neurotransmitter. Also some of Remerons actionis 5ht2a antagonism--clomipramine also has 5ht2a antagonism--I believe this is the key element in some anxieties...
