Trileptal.
Tegretol (carbamazepine) has an excellent history for treating anger and impulse control. Today, my guess is that Trileptal (oxcarbazepine) has replaced Tegretol as the first choice due to its milder side effect profile. With Tegretol, there is a very small risk for the development of agranulocytosis, which is a condition of abnormal white blood cell development. Tegretol requires biweekly blood-tests to screen for this condition. The only concern with Trileptal is that some people develop a reduction of serum sodium. Increasing salt intake and drinking less water should be sufficient as a prophylactic to prevent this from happening. It is probably a good idea to check from time to time with a blood test.
Some people with borderline personality disorder do very well on a combination of Trileptal and Zyprexa.
