I find that if you remember the exact layout of the room in question before you go to sleep (eg if the door is open or closed, light on or off etc) that normally in the dream some small detail is not correct. This enables you to recognize that you are dreaming earlier, as it is much easier to wake up before the real terror begins. I also find that once you gain control over them that they go away...
I've had nightmares every night pretty much my entire life though so I've had quite a bit of practice!!
