Being 'commited' and voluntarily admitting yourself to a hospital are two very different things. Like everyone here has said, it would be difficult for doctors to commit you. I've heard of people being commited for things like psychosis and perhaps irrational suicidal depression. Voluntarily commiting yourself to a hospital is usually an o.k. experience (some people might object, but I bet the majority would agree). I've voluntarily admitted myself three different times, for a week each time. It is mostly to change my medications when I'm really bad off, and when I'm feeling really suicidal and don't know what I might do.
I know that I've been in a 'private hospital' (not connected to a hospital) two times and had even what I might call a 'fun' experience. The patients bonded with eachother, the nurses and doctors were nice, rules were pretty relaxed and we could go for long walks by ourselves outside.
My other hospitalization was in a real hospital. I went to their ER and then they brought me upstairs to the psych ward. That wasn't so much fun. Much more strict, I think they see more serious cases than a private hospital. I did feel like I wanted to escape this one. Luckily it was only for a week too.
