I use it only as a sleep aid at 25mg nightly and I wondered if I would be more sedated if I took 50mg. I've become restless at night (probably as a result of my stress level) and I would surely take 50mg on the rough nights if it would help me stay asleep all night.

Hi Colleen,I can't tell you about the chemistry of the drug but I can tell you how increased dosages have effected me. I've taken this drug off and on for many years now. It's been great for my anxiety and for sleep. When I'm going through particularly rough times, I have had to up the dosage. Increasing it did help more to combat anxiety and promote sleep. I wouldn't be worried that it will become energizing or anxiogenic. That hasn't been my experience. I imagine that it's strong antihistaminic effect has something to do with keeping it sedating. (I should add that I've been up to a dosage of 100 mg. I took it as my only AD many, many years ago. I never found it stimulating and I am extremely sensitive to norepinephrine.)
