Regular users devlop both a metabolic and a psychological tolerance. For some reason this tolerance can disappear if someone takes an amphetamine in a different location or context than their usual one. The majority of deaths due to amphetamines are not overdoses per se but rather death caused by aggressive, unthinking stupid behavior when judgement and mood are impaired.
