I don't know if you are or have seen someone for psychotherapy, but relaxation therapy for 15 or 30 minutes on your own can help diffuse some of these situations.
If you have access to a psychotherapist, ask someone to make a cassette for you to listen to, something that you think is calm.
If not, just lie in a comfortable position and visualize something that you really like and go with that. I know this is the medicine side, and I'm not a doctor obviously so I will leave it at that since I'm not qualified to advise you further, but guided imagery can have an effect.
