Hi Guys,
I have taken straight Benadryl(diphenhydramine hydrochloride) for years with Nardil. I don't believe they are contraindicated. MAOI's may intensify the anticholinergic effects of Benadryl.Read the fine print carefully. They like to sneak in things like pseudoephedrine, which is a definate NO-NO! One time I bought some codeine cough syrup in Canada, over the counter. Since Nardil makes my presbyopia worse, I could not read the fine print. I asked the pharmacist and she assured me it was fine with Nardil. Wrong! The cough syrup contained pseudoephedrine and I ended up in the ER with a hypertensive crisis. Moral of the story: Do not trust anybody when it comes to MAOIs. You must be willing to go the extra mile when taking these meds. The buck stops with you. It is your life.

Drug Interactions: Effects of diphenhydramine are increased by the presence of alcohol, MAOI’s, diazepam, hypnotics, sedatives, tranquilizers, and other CNS depressants. Alcohol enhances such effects as drowsiness, sedation and decreased motor skills. These decrements in effect are more pronounced in the elderly.MAOI’s prolong and intensify the anticholinergic effects of diphenhydramine.
