Thanks Quintal and all the posters - what a support!
> Antipsychotics are probably the best meds for that - used often in nursing homes and psychiatric institutions for this reason. Risperidone is supposedly one of the best APs for rage and hostility and I've seen it work well myself on an patient in the nursing home where I worked who was very abusive and malicious towards the staff. She changed dramatically within days of starting Risperdal and became a sweet, gentle old lady. She developed parkinsonism after a few weeks and had to come off it and the rage and hostility returned.
Risperdal used to do the trick, but it raises my prolactin, so bye bye sex. Perphenazine does a good job too at low doses but I get EPS.
> Benzos may seem to help in the short term but they can bring out an aggressive side of your personality after a while. I found this to be worse with the more disinhibiting benzos such as Klonopin and Ativan. I'm normally a very timid person but I developed an attitude on Klonopin and was violent at times for the first time ever.
Xanax and Klonopin are disinhibiting for me and more useful for my anxieties - I take 2.5 MG Klonopin / day. I find Ativan and Valium useful for acute rage in high doses but on the long run it's not practical: psychomotor retardation, memory impairment.
> Lithium or Depakote may help - have you ever tried them? The Lamictal you're taking could make it worse, that happened to me anyway.
Tried both. Lithium does me terrible acne. Now Depakote (VPA) used to do a good job, but I never satyed on it for too long. I even managed to neutralize its weight gain properties by adding Glucophage. I can recall myself driving in my old car and thinking that I can get no pleasure while on it. And I think that was the case - I couldn't get too angry on VPA, but I couldn't have much joy either. Sure, my current state isn't much joy either...
Any similar experience?
Thanks again!
Jimmy
