Hi everybody.
(small introduction)
I've been had those weird tics for many, many years and i never knew that i was suffering from tourette syndrome until i recently watched an oprah show episode, in which she had invited some children with tourette syndrome!!
In one of these children, a boy, i recognised..... myself.. Only then i realised that i had this syndrome. Nobody has mention the word tourette to me all these years. *sigh* (end of intro)I have most symptoms of the syndrome, like ADD etc, But the most annoying one is the TICS. Let me explain what these tics are, for those who are not aware of condition:
They are NOT involuntary like small spasms or myoclonus. I'm doing this tics on my own will, but then again... my own will is not sufficient to make me stop them. There is a VERY strong compulsion that makes me keep doing them. So, you can say that they are semi-voluntary.
When i perform them i feel some sort of relief. Like if i have completed a task. Then the irresistible compulsion kicks-in again "Do it! Do it!" (No, i do NOT hear voices!) and it forces me to repeat the tic.
The tics consists mainly of:
Pulling and "re-arranging" my clothes, like if some part of my clothing doesn't fit well on my body.
Shake my hands with force in various directions.
Hitting my torso with my hands.
Tapping my feet to the ground like if i was tap-dancing, and also making kick-like movements.
ok, you can stop laughing now. There are also a few vocal tics like compulsive shouting, (without words) which is called klazomania. This happens when i get upset about something.
I need some help from you about this.
I know that the treatment of choice is haloperidol, but i'm not going to touch this horrible drug again. It gives me acute akathisia even on low doses. Those who haven't experience akathisia doesn't know how tyrannising this is. They thing that it is just a kind of psycho-motor agitation.
In higher doses it gives me acute EPS episode and generally, i don't like anti-psychotics.
Just for the record, benzodiazepines worsen the tics for some reasons and so does TCAs like chlorimipramine
