People who take opiates (for whatever reason) are routinely treated like this (unless you are very rich?).

An old (very poor) friend of mine was dying without opiates, the doctor who had prescribed them saying that she, aged 83, needed to be taught a lesson, the hospital doctors being unavailable. So she is dying and withdrawing from a minimal oxycodone dose. No sleep for a few days.
She was left alone in the bath for half an hour. She yelled out eventually. I read her chart, where the problem was worked through.
Problem: Patient calls out in bath.
Solution: Patient counseled to use the call feature.
That's a university education for you.
