I have posted before about my use of Vicodin (almost the same thing as Oxycodone) for depression.

((My main medication is Parnate, now augmented since a few days ago with Lithium. I was up to 40 milligrams of Parnate and it was just impossible to sleep. So I am now down to 30 again and still have trouble sleeping. Also the sexual side effects really bother me, at anything above 20 mg.))

When I get acutely depressed one half of a 5/500 Vicodin will calm me down and allow me to function. I used it effectively and "appropriately" in my opinion during the 10 day wash out period between a previous AD and going back on Parnate, because I was really in bad shape and it helped me get through the day.

However, I will say that I also get cravings and develop symptoms if I am completely free of the Vicodin for more than 18 hours or so. At least sometimes. So even at a small dose of one pill per day or less, there is an addiction component, which seems almost incredible to me, but its there. I sometimes take a half a Vicodin just to "relax" and like to tell myself that its like having a glass of wine after dinner...but I think its a bit more insidious.

My goal would be to stop using vicodin altogether and I am hoping the Lithium will do something with the Parnate. Right now I have just started with 300 mg lithium and will do my first lithium level in a few more days. Or that it can replace Parnate altogether, which has been the opinion of at least two experts in 'atypical depression' I guess that the Lithium can either augment the Parnate, making it more effective at a lower dose, or deal directly with my chemial imbalance, making Parnate unnecessary. Parnate was fine by itself for over 20 years, but I could take a higher dose without the insomnia, and sexual side effects, as well as the low blood pressure which I now get.

As someone said in a previous posting Oxycodene will help with almost anything. You have to be really careful with this drug as it is highly addictive. The trade offs may be worth it for some people, that is a very delicate issue.
