yeah, basically you need to do lots of long slow distance work.
that doesn't have too many other benefits though, and takes a lot of time and it boring.

heart rate variability, on the other hand, does have interesting psychological implications via the vagal nerve (actually i kept looking, there is some association of low heart rate and the low-inhibition phenotype http://psycnet.apa.org/psycinfo/1997-36639-006)
