> phillipa,i think the "escape" is different for each of us.But we can help each other by telling the "how" of it all.Some may be rescued by ect,others by meds,counselling or even a song.I think its a very complicated thing.I know first & foremost,you have to sleep & eat properly,get outside in the sun.Let people in to know you and love you.Believe in a higher power that you can speak to in your darkest times.Run,walk,move everyday.I had to get cbt,and take meds as well.You have to have someone that you can tell your darkest thoughts to,someone who will help you realize that there are better ways to see the world and your life.Honestly, what i did was just take 1 tiny step at a time to climb my way out.
Perhaps there is no pit to climb out of. For some, depression is a great weight on top of them that leaves them crushed and immobile and in pain until it is removed via some external intervention.The point of this metaphor is to demonstrate that depressive disorders are not always defeated through will-power alone
