Diazepam accumulates due to its long half life. You may have needed a high dose initially but you should be able to keep reducing now.

Isolated, occasional doses of diazepam often have a very short duration of action because it is rapidly redistributed to fat and muscle. In an acute crisis, diazepam may need to be given every few hours. After regular dosing, the duration of action is long due to the long elimination half life and active metabolites, it can then be given once or twice a day.
