While for many people, genetics are the predominant cause of depression, for many others depression is caused by either childhood or recent adult trauma (think of returning soldiers with PTSD). We are all such social beings, that anxiety and depression can readily occur in susceptible people with almost any kind of major social trauma (childhood neglect and abuse, adult losses, deaths or severe interpersonal stress). Almost any kind of nurturing, genuine interpersonal relationship can help us recover - a loving sexual relationship, supportive friends or social groups, (even supportive relationships here on Babble!) and psychotherapy, especially the kind where the relationship is very important. All of these, in addition to helping us see where we need to make changes, help us to believe in ourselves and in others, to decrease our anxiety, and to gradually achieve a good life involving work and love (as Freud said - can't believe I'm quoting him!)
Medication etc. is very important, but I personally don't think it's a long-term total solution by itself unless the depression is mainly genetic. Even then, therapy may be helpful.
Here in the US, it's not too difficult to find a good therapist; I gather that it's more difficult in the UK.
