This paper by the neuropharmacologist Dr Ken Gillman, who is an expert in Serotonin Toxicity (ST), explains why Nardil and other MAOIs in conjunction with mirtazapine (Remeron) are safe.

He found that there is no evidence that Remeron is a dual action drug (serotonin and norepinephrine) but a noradrenergic drug with a blockade of some serotonin receptor subtypes, especially 5-HT2A, thus indirectly agonising the 5-HT1A receptors, which has a mood-brightening effect. A further paper, the authors of which I can't remember, says in fact that Remeron can be used to TREAT serotonin toxicity
