I am having hip replacement surgery in three weeks. I had a hip replacement three years ago, same doctor, same hospital. Was taking parnate, no problem.
But I had the pre-op appointment today and was told that the new chief of anesthesiology will not work with patients on MAOI's. Too many potential complications, he says. I have to be off parnate for a week before surgery. That gives me two weeks to discontinue!!
I currently take 40mg/day. In the past, I have discontinued by dropping 10/mg every week or two. I'm not so worried about going off parnate - I have been stable for almost a year and can use abilify PRN if things get bad. But I worry about dropping from 40-0 in two weeks. I will call my p-doc tomorrow to tell him about this.
Have people d/c-ed parnate quickly before? Any d/c problems? What should I expect?
It p**ses me off, because, not only have I had a hip replacement on parnate before, but I had 9 bilateral ECT treatments under anesthesia while on parnate with no issues whatsoever.
