Doxapin is very sedating (very strong antihistamine). It would probably have a more uniform action (trazodone, like you note, does have metabolites which have different activity than trazodone itself). Seroquel might be an option too. I took Seroquel when on parnate (my brief stint with parnate, which gave me insomnia). The two seemed to work well together.
Another option would be trimipramine. It is a TCA antidepressant, and more sedating than doxepin. The benefit is that it has no effect on serotonin or norepinephrine reuptake. This may be a "safer" option to take with an maoi.
